Nick Houston at JC Allgrove's orchards, Langley, Slough which was the last of the great apple nurseries in the Thames Valley. In the 1940s it had 1000 varieties of apple trees. .It's still listed in the directories as being the most diverse commerical grower in the country. Nick has been trying to preserve the place, sell a few fruit trees and try to work out what is still growing there. The place is now a jungle, though a beautiful one. He's pretty sure there are at least two varieties - St Augustine's Orange and King Harry - somewhere in there which are officially extinct. .
