The displaced Hutu population cut down every bit of wood it can find for fuel.  Added to this every inch of land is farmed right up to the summit of the hills. The resulting run-off from the heavy rainfall that the area experiences causes severe leaching of the soil and fllooding on the lower slopes and valleys.  The erosion in some places has rendered the soil infertile
